Mighty Bomb Jack Tips

Fire! Fire! Fire! And don't stop firing are the only instructions you need. Because in this Doomsday extravaganza, there's little time for thinking. A killer instinct is all that matters. And if your trigger finger lacks stamina, Earth will lack a future!

Eh? What's that? We're not doing Super C this month? Oh. Well I guess I can put together a few tips for Mighty Bomb Jack then.

Controls
The only buttons used in the game are Start, 'A', and of course the D-pad. Start pauses the game (OH MAN GUYS!) and A is your multi-purpose button. Press it to jump, then again to stop your jump in midair, and press it on your way down to "float". You can essentially jump to the top of the screen, but the game is a little screwy. Getting a long running start, you can only jump as high as you could standing still, but with a short running start, you can jump all the way to the top. Well that's about it. Simple controls.
The Game
Each of the 17 levels are split into 2 distinct parts, the first part is sidescrolling, action-oriented, for the most part linear gameplay. Then you get to a "bomb room", as I call it, which is a single screen, very primitive action scene where your goal is to collect all of the bombs to open the door to the next level, before the evil re-spawning mutating enemies get you. As you may have noticed, Jack can't attack, making it a simple game of avoiding your enemies. Of course, with 3 lives, no continues, no one-ups†, and the fact that 1 hit kills, the game can take a bit of practice. There are numerous power-ups, most of which do seemingly nothing.
Tips
There is one major tip that you will need to follow before playing MBJ: Get really hopped up on various drugs. You will need them to get past the overall blandness of the gameplay, and the game is so much like an acid trip anyway, combining the two would be quite exciting (it's no wonder this is one of OSG's favorite games ;). Provided you do that, and sit down to play Mighty Bomb Jack, follow these tips to triumph your way to level 17 where you will inevitably become stuck like the rest of us and never beat it.
*Speed is your MAIN ally in MBJ, keep going and don't slow down until you get to the bomb room. The respawning enemies will build up if you stay on the same screen
*When an enemy is appearing you have ample time to walk through him, up until about a second after it fully appears
*Don't worry about all of the treasure chests, unless you are a stickler for high scores, just keep moving
*When you get to the bomb room, it's wise to get all of the bombs in the first half of the room right away, the enemies will form all the way on the other side, get as many bombs as you canbefore having to get the "pokeball" item which turns the enemies into coins, and from that point you should be able to get the rest of the bombs and head out without trouble
*(in the first part of the level) When you hear a sound, that means the next treasure chest you get will have the pokeball-looking item in it. Get it to eradicate enemies
*On level 11, make sure you float to the right from the start of the level, whatever you do don't go down, or you'll have to go all the way back to level 6
*Get 10 coins (the kind you get from using the pokeballs) in any level, good stuff will happen...

Well, that's about all I can tell you. The game is very simplistic, and a lot of it cannot be expressed in a tips sheet or walkthrough, it is mostly learn-as-you-go action. One other important tip is to practice, the game isn't all that hard, and once you know what to expect in each level it is a piece of cake. I hope this helped someone, because I had to endure hours of mindless MBJ playing, a game I don't particularly like mind you, to give you this.
On the game over screen, the game delightfully shows you your god damn value

† Editor's note: there are one-ups in MBJ. They're just hard to find.
